| Job Description: |
Definition: Assists dentist at chairside, employing the latest concept of four-handed dentistry and serves as front/backup receptionist and works as front receptionist. Responsibilities: A. Room set-up 1. Before seating patient, clears counters of all items to prevent contamination. 2. Covers headrest, light handles, tray, Air/Water syringe, suctions and slow speed handpiece motor with appropriate barriers. 3. Seats patient and checks patient’s identity using at least two patient identifiers. 4. Drapes patient to receive dental treatment. 5. Sets up a tray with appropriate instruments, materials and medications for use in dental procedures. B. General Assisting 6. Prepares and/or mixes restorative materials, dental cements and impression materials (e.g. IRM, Dycal, Tempbond, etc.) when necessary. 7. Keeps oral operating areas clean during dental procedures. 8. Passes required instruments, materials and medications to dentist. 9. Assists during oral surgery. 10. Performs routine maintenance - lubricates equipment and replaces expendable parts. 11. Takes blood pressure on patient initially (initial exam), annually (recall exam), and when requested by a dentist. 12. Performs extra-oral duties specified by the dentist. 13. Wears proper attire and personal protective equipment during assisting (mask, gloves, and gowns). 14. Maintains equipment and supplies in dental area at established inventory level. 15. Takes alginate impressions for diagnostic and opposing models. 16. Pours models and trims them. 17. Performs coronal polishing. 18. Makes temporary crowns and cements them. 19. Places sealants on teeth (if certified) C. X-rays 20. Before taking x-rays, checks health history and asks childbearing age female patient is she is pregnant. 21. Places a lead apron on patient when taking x-rays. (If pregnant, places two lead aprons) 22. Disposes lead backings into the designated container. 23. Develops x-rays using x-ray processor. 24. Mounts x-rays and writes patient’s name, date and the name of the supervising dentist on the x-ray mount using a marker or places an appropriate label (patient’s name, date, etc.) D. Oral Hygiene 25. Gives proper oral hygiene instructions to patient. 26. Applies topical fluoride after scaling and polishing by the supervising dentist. E. Clean-up 27. Flushes out high speed handpiece for 30 seconds before detaching from the line. 28. Detaches angle/attachments from the slow speed handpiece motor. If the motor was covered with plastic sleeve and only angles/attachment was in the mouth, the motor can be sprayed with designated disinfection solution. Wipes it down with paper towels. However, if the motor was contaminated in any way, sterilize the motor. 29. Removes all barriers and discards them. 30. Sprays all surfaces with designated disinfection solution and wipes them down with paper towels after one minute. F. Instrumental Sterilization 31. Places instruments in ultrasonic cleaner. 32. Rinses instruments in running tap water. 33. Dries instruments with clean towel. 34. Places instruments into sterilization pouch which has the date of sterilization, expiration date, and initials indicated. 35. Sterilizes instruments using Steam Autoclave or Statim. 36. Performs routine maintenance – lubricates equipment and replaces expendable parts.
G. Sterilization of Handpieces
High Speed Handpiece 37. Flushes out high speed handpiece for 30 seconds before detaching from the line. 38. Sprays external surfaces of handpiece with designated disinfection solution and wipes it down with paper towels. 39. Runs it under hot water. 40. Dries it thoroughly with paper towels. 41. Sprays lubricant for 1-2 seconds. 42. Wipes excess lubricant with gauze. 43. Sterilizes handpieces using Steam Autoclave or Statim. 44. Performs routine maintenance – lubricates equipment and replaces expendable parts. Slow Speed Handpiece 45. Detaches angles/attachment form the motor. 46. Sprays external surfaces of angles/attachments with designated disinfection solution and wipes down with paper towels. 47. Rinses angles/attachments with hot tap water. 48. Dries them thoroughly using paper towels. 49. Sterilizes handpieces using Steam Autoclave or Statim. 50. Performs routine maintenance – lubricates equipment and replaces expendable parts.
H. Maintenance of Equipments 51. X-ray developer – changes water in developer daily and changes developer and fixer weekly. 52. Ultrasonic Cleaner – changes ultrasonic solution daily. 53. Cleans evacuation system daily. 54. Steam Autoclave – conducts spore test weekly and documents. 55. Statim Autoclave – conducts spore test weekly and documents. 56. Checks level of oxygen in Oxygen tank daily and documents. 57. Checks eye wash station monthly and documents. 58. Cleans waterline using waterline cleaner weekly and documents. 59. Changes filter in each dental operatory weekly. 60. Checks Emergency Kit daily and restocks when necessary. 61. Maintains daily/weekly logs for above procedures. 62. Customer Service- Treats customers, patients, co-workers, and others with dignity respect and trust. Is able to work effectively by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitment; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical solutions; addressing others by name, title or other respectful identifier, and respecting the diversity of our workforce in actions, words and deeds.
63. Participates in all safety programs which may include assignment to an emergency response team.
64. Participates in hazardous waste and infection control assignments as required in the health center which may include being designated as an emergency responder to a hazardous substance release or spill; performing infection control data collection, evaluation, reporting and follow-up as specified in the NEVHC clinical health services policy and procedures manual.

Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served and has knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He or she is able to identify and categorize each patients age specific grouping of needs, such as those for infant, adolescent, or geriatric patients. |
