Job Description: Dentist
Definition:
The Dentist provides the following dental services for adult and children; cleaning, scaling, extractions, fillings and anterior root canals and other dentistry services according to medical staff practice guidelines. Demonstrates good judgment when a dental problem is beyond the scope of services provided in the clinic.

Responsibilities:

Administrative
Provides close supervision and is responsible for the activities of the dental staff including volunteer dentists. Develops and maintains a list of referrals for procedures beyond the scope of services. Gathers required statistics. Works with Clinic Administrator to determine appropriate copay for dental services. Schedules volunteer dentists and staff based on needed in-house services. Contacts appropriate agencies to confirm volunteer dentist's licenses, DEA number and that they are in good standing with the appropriate agencies as delineated in policies and procedures. Supervises collection and documentation of any fees collected by dental clinic personnel. Participates and attends staff meetings and practice growth activities. Supervises dental appointment scheduling. Utilizes computer network to coordinate appointments for the dental clinic. Maintains and supervises all security procedures of the clinic. Participates in all safety programs which may include assignment to an emergency response team. Participates in hazardous waste and infection control assignments as required in the health center which may include being designated as an emergency responder to a hazardous substance release or spill; performing infection control data collection, evaluation, reporting and follow-up as specified in the NEVHC clinical health services policy and procedures manual.

Quality Improvement
Develops and maintains a system of peer review which follows the policies and procedures of the NEVHC Quality Improvement Committee. Consistently follows Universal Precautions. Maintains a policy and procedure for cleaning and sterilization of dental instruments. Maintains equipment maintenance program utilizing an appropriate NEVHC resource. Maintains policies and procedures pertaining to the use of radiological imagining in the dental clinic. Consistently inquires and records the possibility of pregnancy before utilizing radiological imaging. Observes all established safety policies and procedures including proper shielding techniques. Maintains appropriate systems for handling and disposing of x-ray developing solutions and complies with all Haz-Met standards. Maintains a MSDS for all solutions and products used in the dental clinic. Maintains a schedule of routine cleaning of dental equipment, chairs, tables, etc., using approved solutions. Coordinates with the Clinic Administrator on a patient evaluation tool of dental clinic services.

Dental Records
Maintains current complete dental records.2. Coordinates integration of system of recordkeeping consistent with NEVHC systems. Maintains patient confidentiality.

Supplies
Maintains standard inventory. Orders supplies as needed. Promptly notifies the clinic assistants of supplies that need to be returned. Maintains a good relationship with the vendors. Maintains current knowledge of new products available that may be appropriate for use in the dental clinic to increase quality of care. Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Protective Equipment:
Gloves, gowns, masks and face shield.

Qualifications:
Graduation from an American Dental Association (ADA) approved dental school.
Current valid California License as a dentist and DEA number.
One or more years practice of general dentistry in a community clinic setting.
Preferably bilingual English/Spanish.
Must demonstrate through written and/or oral testing, the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served and has knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He or she is able to identify and categorize each patients age specific grouping of needs, such as those for infant, adolescent, adult or geriatric patients.
